In 2023, the NGA Center convened states to discuss approaches and communication strategies regarding health equity. The NGA team compiled information from discussions in these convenings as well as in learning calls and research to identify high-level themes and insights.
The three themes that emerged as top health equity priorities for states are:
- Coordinating health equity initiatives across agencies,
- Centering community voice and priorities in health equity work, and
- Integrating equity into policymaking.

In 2024, the NGA Center will facilitate a learning network of states and territories interested in advancing their health equity goals, with a kick-off event in March.

Request for Applications
NGA has released a request for applications to support states and territories for a period of 16 months in peer learning and custom technical assistance to advance Governors’ health equity priorities, particularly related to health equity for people with disabilities, racially and ethnically marginalized groups, and rural communities. Through the learning network, a group of states and territories will:
- participate in an in-person kick-off meeting near Washington, DC
- join monthly virtual learning and peer-learning opportunities,
- receive ongoing technical assistance from NGA Center staff and consultants in support of health equity goals, and
- attend an in-person wrap-up meeting.
